Alric Eduard is 22 years old, from Bavaria, Germany 1870. He is about to immigrate to America.
America At Last
On July 19th, 1870, France declares war on Prussia. Because they feared Prussia wanted to expand German unification. Several parts of Germany got involved, including Bavaria.
Alric joins many others on one of the few ships to America, bringing only a small suitcase which contains clothes and a few personal belongings. It was a long, four month journey. Because Alric was poor, like many others, he lived in the bottom of the ship in tiny rooms and few beds. The rooms often flooded with no more than a foot of water and sickness spread like wildfire, but thankfully, Alric stayed healthy the whole time.
Alric arrives at Ellis Island, where he's processed and waits a month until he is approved to stay in the US. He settles in Knox, Maine and shares a small two-bedroom apartment with a French family of five. For the first couple of months, he has almost no money and most people, except other foreigners dislike him. The family he lives with is fluent in English and teaches Alric how to speak it, which helps him greatly.
Not many jobs were available at the time, so Alric started working at a small brewery minutes from his home. He worked hard and made a good amount of money and everyone loved working with him.
**Five years later** Alric moves out of the apartment building into his own house, but he stays close to the family he lived with. On his way he found a stray dog and chose to keep it and name her Sascha, and the brewery he works at became a huge business. Finally, Alric got to have family which has lived on for generations.
