  • Anna and Max, time to go!!!!
  • Should I bring this? Do I need it?
  • Nearly...
  • Are we there yet?
  • This is Anna and her family, (left to right) Hempi (the maid), Max (her brother) Anna, Papa (her father), and Mama (her mother). They are Jews who live Berlin, Germany.
  • Anna's father is a famous Jewish author, and is wanted by the Nazis (Adolf Hitlers followers). Anna parents fear that if they don't leave the country soon, they will get their passports taken off them by Adolf Hilter if he wins the elections. Hitler hates Jews, so they decide to leave to Switzerland, leaving Hempi , and pink rabbit behind.
  • The house may be small, but i'm sure we'll manage
  • So Anna, Max, and Mama traveled by train to the Switz border where Papa was waiting for them. When they got there they moved into the best hotel in Switzerland, and much to Anna's delight went and got some food!
  • Paris looks so cool!!!!
  • Wow, the view is amazing!!!
  • A few days after they arrived in Switzerland, Anna fell ill, and was forced to stay inside. While she was sick she was asleep most of the time and had many odd dreams. When she finally awoke she found out that Hitler had won the elections, (her parents were really glad they had already decided to move), and that they would be moving out again to a small village for a more permanent house.
  • When they got to the Gasthof Zwrin they were all delighted to discover that it was right on the banks of Lake Zurich. The children spent their 6 months there swimming, playing tag and exploring their surroundings with the other children who lived there. Papa had worked as a journalist in Germany writing articles for newspapers etc. But the Swiss didn't want the Nazi's to attack them because Anna's father was writing bad things about Hitler. Meaning he was unable to write.
  • So when he got asked to write for the Daily Parisian in Paris (a newspaper published by German refugees) he couldn't say no. Anna and Max stayed in Switzerland by themselves for 2 weeks while Mama and Papa went to Paris to find accommodation and sort everything out. After 2 weeks Papa came back to collect them and bring them to their new home. When they got there Anna and Max are thrilled to find that it comes with their very own elevator!
