Hi, my name is Lucy! Come with me and I will tell you the story of how I became a fossil, one of the first human fossils to be discovered!
It all began with my death. Researchers still do not have conclusive to the cause of my death, but it is believed that I fell off a ledge, and died in the fall.
I lay there for many centuries. Gradually, my fossilization began, as my body became covered with silt and sediment.
Gradually, the environment in which my body lay became water-filled, and this carried in more sediment, as well as compressing my body. My bones began their transformation into not bone anymore, but stone.
Due to radioactive dating, scientists discovered that I was 3.18 million years. I lay in fossilization for that long! In fact, I am one of the first complete hominid skeleton fossils to be discovered.
I was found by Donald Johanson and Tom Gray on November 24, 1974, at the site of Hadar in Ethiopia. Since then, I have been stored in a specially constructed safe in the Paleoanthropology Laboratories of the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
