Storyboard Text

  • Today we will learn about shale creation!
  • Clay particles start off as a piece of cliff that has fallen off
  • Shale is made of clay particles.
  • The piece of rock bumps into other rocks and starts a process called physical weathering
  • After being carried down the body of water for a long time (thousands of miles) the particles get smaller and smaller
  • The particles get smaller to the point where they are considered sand, then silt, then finally clay
  • The particles get smaller to the point where they are considered sand, then silt, then finally clay
  • In a basin, they settle, and then they get compacted by pressure
  • Groundwater fills the space pores and the cement in the groundwater binds the particles together forming a sedimentary rock called shale
