  • Nitrogen
  •
  • That nitrogen cannot be used by plants directly, so bacteria in the ground mix it with oxygen to create ammonia. This is called nitrogen fixation.
  • Bacteria
  • Ammonia
  • Hello! Nitrogen makes up 78% of our atmosphere.
  • That Ammonia is still toxic, so another bacteria uses ammonia to create a compound used by plants, this is nitrification.
  • When we die or poop, bacteria break down the dead bodies and let nitrogen in the ground, which is ready for nitrogen fixation.
  • Later, animals and people eat those plants, so nitrogen enters our DNA.
  •
  • But some nitrogen atoms go back to the atmosphere, to complete the Nitrogen cycle!
