Imagine you are at home studying for your online Microbiology course when suddenly you feel something is not quite right. After a couple of days you go to the doctor. They take a sample and tell you the results will be available in a few days.
When you get the report back you see several tests that you have learned about in class. You go through the results step by step and you identify the microbe that has been causing you distress. This process is what goes on in a real lab setting when an unknown microbe is present.
In this lab you will use a simulation to identify the unknown microbe. You will be given real lab test results through pictures and data and your mission is to interpret the data by comparing data to controls and using a tool called a dichotamous key ( a Microbiology flow chart) to ID your microbe. For example .....
Objective: Identify the unknown microbe by applying standard laboratory tests and comparing results to characteristics of known bacteria
Background Information about Sample
24 different lab tests will be available for each microbe. Each microbe profiled will have a set of test results which will be positive or negative and will match the real world test result for that microbe.

Students will record the results from the tests provided for their microbe Students will use the results to match to a list of possible microbes (Characteristics may be given or not given based on instructor preference or this could be a pre-lab option) Students will turn in a completed table/report with results for their sample and identify their unknown microbe.
