  • The Battle of Fort Sumter April 1-2,  1861
  • The First Battle of Bull Run  July 21, 1861
  • Battle of Antietam September 17-18, 1862
  • This was the first battle of the Civil War. It took place in Charleston South Carolina. The battle happened after South Carolina seceded. In the end the Union surrendered.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville April 30-May 6,1863
  • This was considered the first major battle of the Civil War Both armies were mainly made up of volunteers and untrained people. This battle was messy and brutal. Union sent confederacy into surrender.
  • Siege of Vicksburg Summer of 1863
  • This battle stopped the confederate invasion in Maryland. It was thebloodiest battle in American history at the time. 22,000 dead
  • Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863
  • One of the greatest Confederate victories. The Union was forced to retreat. TheConfederacy was outnumbered. But the Union had about 5,000 more casualties.
  • Union had complete control over the Mississippi River. Areas west of it were separated from the res of the South. The siege lasted 6 weeks. Gained control over the Mississippi River. grant became General-in-Chief after this vivtory
  • Was a turning point and had the highest casualties of any battle.Despite heavy losses the North held their defense and ended Lee’s attempt to invade the North.This battle resulted in the Gettysburg Address and redefined the purpose of the war.
