• Algebra StoryBoard By Drew Newlin
• Next, I must cancel out a variable. I will use equations 2 and 3.
• The sum of three numbers is 14. The largest is 4 times the smallest. The sum of the smallest and twice the largest is 18. Find the three numbers.
• x=lowest number y=middle number z=highest number
• We will use elimination to solve this problem
• So first I need to figure out my variables and my equations.
• 1. x+y+z=14 2. 4x=z 3. x+2z=18
• You have to multiply eq. 3 by 4 so we can cancel out the x variable.
• 2. -4x+z=0           z=8          3. 4x+8z=72 9z=72
• 3. x+16=18       -16  -16 x=2
• Now I must plug z into equation 2 or 3. I will use 3.
• 1. 2+y+8=14 y+10=14 y=4
• I start with eq. 1 which was x+y+z=14. Then plug in 8 for z and 2 for x.
• Finally I must plug x and z into one of the first three equations. I will use 1.
• Final Answer: X=2 y=4 z=8
