I was eighteen the first time I ever boarded a plane. This one was taking me out of my country to America. The was nothing that I was running from, but I didn't exactly know what I was running to.
I stood out at work and school. My clothes were different, my speech was chaka chaka, and I had no direction.
I had always been very conscious of my differences and decided to do something about. I started wearing less tropical clothes and trying to sound "American."

I had very little understanding and help in my transition. Along with work, I went to school but ended up getting a worthless diploma so I had to work harder to find something sustainable.
I don't think that at that age I really knew who I was which led me to compromise my lifestyle. However, while I may not have had all of the pieces of the puzzle together, I will never forget where I started.
