  • The Civil War was fought for the equal rights of African Americans.  It did accomplish this by ending slavery.
  • Whites Only
  • While slavery was gone, people with black skin were not treated equally
  • Blacks
  • Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to change this. One of the more famous things he did was giving his "I have a dream," speech.
  • 250,000 people came to his "I have a dream," speech in front of the Washington Monument on August 28, 1963.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968 by James Earl Ray while he was sitting on his balcony. 
  • Even though Martin was murdered at an early age of 39 he changed the US for the better, being an important role in ending segregation.
  • Blacks and whites only.
