  • Characterization We learn about Hearthstone's family. His angry, and crazy father, and his dead brother and mother. Hearthstone blames himself for his brother's death. His father blames him for both deaths.
  • "She fought ferociously, wrapping her garrote around the neck of one wolf, kicking the other, but she was outmatched and had lost too much blood"(87).
  • Imagery Magnus's uncle, Randolph, had a picture of where the wedding guests had to show up at. It was a waterfall that both Alex and Magnus had hiked at.
  • "Clay can be shaped and reshaped, over and over, but if it gets to dry, it sets...and there's only so much you can do with it. When it gets to that point, you'd better be sure it's in the shape you want it to be forever'"(448).

  • Flashback We get to see how Alex died. She gave her life for a coward. Everyone in Valhalla sees the newbie's death to make sure they deserve Valhalla.
  • Symbolism Loki's symbol is two snakes wrapped together. Alex believes that to stop Loki from having control over you, you need to embrace his abilities. Moldable like wet clay. Sam is scared to embrace his abilities for fear of him taking over, like dry clay.
