Rex always told their family that their future depended on building the glass castle, their "dream home." But that dream never came true.
While the Walls family was on their way to another town, Jeanette fell out of the car and the parents didn't even notice until hours later.
While they were living with Rex's parents in Welch, Erma, Rex's grandma, was sexually abusive towards the children. Rex even defended her actions.

Eventually, the Walls moved into their own run-down house in Welch. It was terrible living conditions and the some of the worse years of their lives.
Jeanette tries saving up money from working, but Rex always asks for money and eventually even takes what she's saved up and spends it on alcohol.
