Storyboard Text

  • Langston Hughes 1902-1967
  • Hughes grew up with his grandmother until she died during his teen years.  He then lived with his mother who moved around often.  He also spent time with his father in Mexico.
  • He wanted to see the world so he took jobs (steward, busboy) that would help him go to new places and meet new people.
  • Your poetry is the bees knees.  Let's get you published!
  • Wow.  I'm only 19! I hope my jazz and approachable style helps me do this as a career!
  • Along with poetry, Hughes was a novelist, lyricist, activist, professor,  war correspondent and HUGE contributor to the Harlem Renaissance's movement and culture.
  • I will not take "but" for an answer.  Negroes have been looking at democracy's but to long.
  • Quotes by Hughes
  • What Happens to a Dream Deferred?  Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?... Or does it explode?
  • Democracy will not come Today, this year Nor ever through compromise and fear
