Storyboard Description

Solution: Joe Hirsch recommends to do the following: 1. Name the context—the time and place—where the problem occurs, like during small-group interactions. 2. Share specific and objective observations about what happened. 3. Describe how the student’s actions impact others emotionally and why that matters. 4. Ask parents for input on how the issue can be resolved productively, so you approach the problem as partners.

Storyboard Text

  • Hello, Mrs Smith. Thank you for coming to today’sparent-teacher conference. I would first like to focus on the positive improvements your son has been making. I can confidently say he is the mosthelpful and courteous student in the class. He has consistently provided selfless service to me and the entire class this semester.
  • I am so happyto hear that. Emil has always had that generous quality. But how is he doing academically? I was so worried about coming to his meeting. I hate to hear negative things about my son.
  • I completely understand Mrs Smith. Today I want to focus on a specific thing that happened and then ask for your input on how you think the issueshould be resolved productively.
  • That sounds like a reasonable approach. I am still feeling a little apprehensive. So…what is the issue with my son?

  • That sounds like a reasonable approach. I am still feeling a little apprehensive because I raised him well. So…what is the issue with my son?
  • I like that! I think you would make a great teacheryourself! Let’s go ahead with that idea. I will create the lesson plan and have Emil work after school tomorrow.
  • Ok. Please let me know what time he will be ready to be picked up from school. I can stay at the office a little later so that he can come home with me.
  • Thank you for coming
