Union forces waged a campaign to take the confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, Mississippi, which lay on the East bank of the Mississippi river.
General Benjamin Butlers crossed over the Appomattox river and attacked the Petersburg denfenses June 15th.
They were once attacked again on June 18th but were repulsed with heavy causalities. By this point, the confederate works very heavily manned and greatest opportunity to capture Petersburg without a siege was lost. (Union was attacked)
They finally went to war...
The war came to a end...
And the union got the victory
