Personification is used when Walt descirbes the trees and shrubs as ominous beings who seem to be looking at him
Imagery is used to contribute to the meaning of this poem which is darkness and despair when he says " the fields and woods dim outline
Walt's attitude comes off in a depressing way because of the war, but is grateful for the good times.
after line 6 the poem shifts from his depression to his gratefulness
Whitman is looking at a flame that makes him think of war and home.
The theme of this poem is no matter how depressing something is, there are always good memories and thoughts
