Why were longhorn cattle important to the Texas cattle industry?The longhorn were well suited for the life in Texas. They could eat the native grasses and they could do very well in either hot or cold weather. They could eat the prickly pear cactus during Texas droughts and could thrive on very little water. When the Civil War broke out the demand for beef increased rapidly. The Confederate needed to feed their troops.
Describe what life was/is like in the oil fields? Working in the Texas oil fields was rough,dirty, and dangerous. Many of the workers had 12 hour shifts with no breaks. Some of the workers were sometimes burned by the gas wells that they had no way of knowing or controlling. Gases escaped from the wells could easily hurt or kill workers.

Railroads allowed Texas farmers to ship goods to markets faster and at less cost and carried imports of construction materials and supplies to western parts of the state.
