  • Elder... I now believe I am mature enough to begin preparation for my Vision Quest. May I have your permission to do so?
  • Of course, Ahanu! You are more than ready to start your vision quest! You have my blessing to begin the preparation.
  • This location is only a small distance from my village and should do just fine.
  • It is a lot harder to stay awake overnight than I thought it would be.
  • At the sweat lodge...
  • Wait... what is this ritual supposed to do?
  • This is called the "smudging ritual". These sacred ashes will protect you during your quest.
  • Hello, my name is Chaska, recently known as Ahanu, and this is a story of the steps I took in completing my vision quest. It all started during my early teenage years when I finally felt ready to begin my quest. I approached one of the main elders of my tribe for his permission, and he happily granted it!
  • What is that behind the tree? It looks just like my grandfather. But it can't be... he passed away years ago! I must be having my vision!
  • Wow! I can't believe my vision quest has started! I have been looking forward to this day for ever!
  • Two days later...
  • Returning to the village...
  • It was now my personal responsibility to prepare myself and ensure I was ready for the very physically demanding challenge of a vision quest. The quest requires me to stay in nature by myself for multiple days, while also fasting, praying, and being awake the whole time. I practiced these things in advance to make sure my body and mind were prepared for such a challenge.
  • Elder! I saw an unbelievable vision of my late grandfather. What do you think this means?
  • Good to hear Ahanu! This is a great vision to have. Seeing your grandfather is a sign that you should follow his footsteps in being a hunter!
  • While preparing for the vision quest. I also participated in many traditional rituals and ceremonies, such as the smudging ritual, sweat lodge, and sundance. These practices ensured I was spiritually prepared for my vision quest.
  • Congratulations to Chaska for a very successful Vision Quest! Let us celebrate!
  • The day had finally come. I was so excited to begin my vision quest! Other than the occasional check-up from a member of my tribe, I was completely alone and by myself in the wilderness. It only took a couple of days for me to have my vision, and soon after I headed back home.
  • The first thing I did when I returned to my village was ask the elder the meaning behind the vision. He told me that a vision of a late ancestor usually means that you are meant to follow their footsteps, meaning I was to be one of the tribe's hunters.
  • On the same night of my return, a festival was held for my successful vision quest, and to celebrate the changing of my name. I was blessed with gifts, wisdom, and food through the whole night while the whole tribe danced around the campfire.
