The Spanish and its allies, retreated back to Tlaxcala for about 5 months. Meanwhile, the Aztecs were dying from smallpox, a disease the Spanish brought to meso-America from Spain. About half there population died including Cuitlahuac in those 5 months. His cousin Cuauhtémoc succeeded him.
Cortes returned to Tenochtitlan with the Tlaxcalans, as well as the Texcoco warriors. With half their population down, the Aztecs had an even harder time defending against the Spanish. After 75 days, the Aztec empire crumpled and Cauhtemoc was hanged. The Aztec empire was no more.

Cortes later sent a message to king Charles V about his victory and then tore down the temples and pyramids. Then in 1522, Cortes became governor and Captain General of New Spain.
