  • Principles of Government
  • Hello class! Today we will be learning about the Principles of Government!
  • Principles of Government
  • There are four characteristics of the state.
  • Can anybody guess what they are?
  • *crickets*
  • Okay... Well, it's population, territory, sovereignty, and government.
  • There are three basic forms of government. unitary, federal, and confederate
  • The powers in a government are divided between a central government and several local governments
  • In an oligarchy, the power to rule is held by a small, usually self- appointed elite.
  • The purpose of a government is to form a perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty.
  • To classify governments, you have to ask: who can participate in the governing process, the geographic distribution of governmental power within the state, and the relationship between the legislative and executive branches of the government
  • The free enterprise system is also called capitalism.
  • A recognition of the fundamental worth and dignity of every person, respect for the equality of all persons, a faith in majority rule and an insistence upon minority rights, an acceptance of the necessity of compromise, and an insistence upon the widest possible degree of individual freedom
  • There are five concepts of democracy.
