Storyboard Text

  • Hi! My name is Georgia and this is my little brother Matthew. We are serfs, and our home is behind us. At night, starting soon, we will need to light candles for light since there will no longer be sunlight.
  • See these here strips of land? We serfs are required to give part of our crops to our lord and king, which at this time is Charlemagne.
  • Peasants and serfs are the same except for one key difference. Serfs are peasants who are not free. Serfs and peasants were a big part in the Middle Ages.
  • A serf sister and brother are at their house and getting ready to go to bed. Serfs had to light candles to have light since electricity had not been invented then.
  • Serfs had to get up everyday except Sunday to tend to their crops. The crops were laid out in strips across the land.
  • It isn't fair that the nobles and king get our food. We work so hard for it. They need to take on some new responsibilities besides running the government, like growing their own food!
  • I'm so hungry! Why can't we just keep what's ours? I'm so tired too! I don't like getting up at 3 AM six days a week!
  • Not far away lived Charlemagne in his castle. Charlemagne ruled his country through a political system called Feudalism.
  • There were also knights, who served everybody and followed the Code of Chivalry. Knights fought for the king and nobles.
  • Serfs and peasants did not like to give their food to the lord and king because I they worked so hard to grow it. They only did it for land, money, and a home.
