Hello! I am a peasant living in France in 1793. My family and I are poor and hungry.
Even though the majority of France was like this person, about 3% of the population had the majority of the wealth. The nobility and the church lived lavishly while people starved.
Because of the divide in wealth, the peasants and the working class weren't happy with the monarchs who were leading France, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. They wanted more representation and less taxes.
I don't really understand why the people are so angry... if they are hungry, they should just eat, right Louis?
Yes, it makes no sense, Marie!
I don't know why everyone's so mad...
Louis XVI was sent to the guillotine on January 21st, 1793. He was executed because of his poor leadership and lack of understanding for the people.
In April of 1793, the Committee of Public Safety was created to rule the people. In charge was Maximillian Robespierre, who was very radical in his beliefs for the time. The Committee will eventually execute 16,000-50,000 people suspected of treason.
