Why does she have to be in our class, I am disgusted and scared at the same time.
Grace has always seen the same story of Latinos/Mexicans, they are narcs/narcos, rapist, and simply are horrible people. She believed this, she had seen or heard nothing different but this.
Not only does television and live sources provide this information, but some books Grace read also had the same or similar information; Grace could not believe how horrible some people/races could be, she despised them.
Grace's school and overall community had the same image about Latinos this affected many and some even started to believe it themselves. No one here was safe from the single-story, the true image of these people. Everyone had heard the same thing, so it must be true right?
One Friday afternoon, Grace was assigned to research a foreign culture over the weekend; she was also assigned to use that research to write a paper on the culture. Grace not knowing about other countries or cultures apart from Mexico, she decided to go with it (Mexico). As she dove further and further down she realized Latinos were not what she thought they were, they were much more, something way better than what she had heard before.
However, she was still not sure, this seemed very fishy, it seemed false. Nevertheless, she went with the information she had discovered that weekend, she let it be and did not think much about it after. However she still felt doubt and did not know what to believe, she was lost.
This mindset finally changed when Grace had an emergency flight to Mexico after her father was severely injured due to a car crash, she was devastated (father worked in Mexico).
