As Carrine sets out to stake a homestead for herself in North Dakota on the prairie.
There she lives alone in her claim shack. Subsisting on potatoes and salt.
She bares the door each night against the coyotes.
This is where she raises her chickens to be traded for groceries. Some she kept and raised to be full bree.
She raises six children, Bernice, Florence, there brother Norman then Gladys, frances and then Carrine.
