  • In October 2016 Uber suffered a large -scale cyber attack that exposed the confidential data of 57 million customers and drivers. 
  • GitHub
  •  the company allegedly paid its hackers a  $100000 ransom to delete data and not publicize the breach to the media or regulators 
  • The hack included names, email addressees and phone numbers of more than 50 million uber users worldwide and 7million uber drivers had data exposed.  
  • The hackers used GitHub  code repository used by uber an were able to collect private login credentials to an Amazon cloud computing server,  from which they stole a list from rider and driver data . 
  • This incident made the chief legal officer leave  the company
  • Because of this incident uber has changed the director of the national counter terrorism center to help it buff up security, and stop this from happening again.
