After douglass gets chased into the woods he meets a guy named sandy jenkins. Douglass then finds out sandy is also a runaway slave. Douglass tells covey about how he was hit in the head and ran to his old owners and they helped him and he came back late and that's how he got here. Sandy took douglass to his house he had built in the woods and sandy fed him there and let him stay there. The next day douglass says he has to go back but sandy said before you leave I have something for you, sandy took him to a tree in the woods and gave him a special root that would keep him from getting whipped so douglass took it and went back to the plantation.
Douglas arrives at the plantation waiting for covey to run out and whip him. A few minutes later what douglas was thinking happened covey ran over to him and tried to whip him but douglas blocked the blow with his shoulder and douglas hit covey and covey fell to the ground. And douglass jumped on him and covey kicked douglass off of him and the fighting paused. Covey has a really surprised look on his face because he has never had a slave fight back against him or even talk back to him. After the fight covey has never tried to disrespect douglass again except for a couple of “you don't want to fight me again or it will be worse for you”. Finally douglass had the hope again that he will become free and he has more confidence.
After the fight douglass has more confidence in himself than he has had in a long time. He feels this because he knows if he gets the chance to ever escape to freedom he knows he will be able to do it. Something I have learned from douglass is “if you are born one way you don’t have to die the same way”. And that's just what douglass did he became a free man after many years of slavery.
