Mrs.Auld taught douglass how to read oneday. Mr.Auld caught them and got mad at her and was saying if you teach a slave to read he/she will forever be unfit to be a slave so, mr.auld sent douglass to master covey's plantation in 1833. When douglass got there he found out covey was a slave breaker. A slave breaker is a slave owner that tries to take the hope from slaves and ruin it for them. At the plantation douglass had to work no matter how hot or cold it was, they were forced to work. Covey was a mean, selfish, and harsh person.
The conflict in this story is covey v.s. Douglass. Douglass is whipped constantly on his six month stay with covey. Every day douglass wakes up he knows off the top of his head it is going to be a bad day. Covey is waiting by the front door every single day watching to see if anyone is late to work or not working, if any one was not working he would sneak up on them and scream as loud as he could to get them to work again. Douglass was whipped and hit for no reason. Covey thought it was alright to whip slaves because they are property and you can do anything you want with property.
Douglass is fanning wheat with three other slaves when douglass gets very sick and falls to the ground. Covey finds out that they have stopped there work so he ran over there. Covey gets there and asked what happened the three other slaves say douglass passed out he’s over there on the ground. Covey walks to douglass and asked what was wrong and douglass whispered “i'm too weak to talk”. Covey tells douglass to get up douglass tries but falls right back down to the ground so covey gave him a “savage kick to the side” and covey hits him in the head with a big hickory stick. Covey then walked away. Douglass got up to his feet a few minutes later and goes back to the aulds house and asks for help so they bandage him up. Douglass goes back the next day and he gets there late covey sees him and tries to chase him but douglass ran away into the field and then into the woods.
