Mildred tries to straighten up Montag's bed but he refuses because the book is under his pillow. While Beatty is rambling on about books, Mildred and Montag are arguing.

After Beatty leaves, Montag confesses to Mildred that he's been snagging books all along. Just as he takes all of the books out of the grill, the Mechanical Hound shows up at the door.
Montag and Mildred decide to ignore the hound and they keep reading, but they get nothing out of the books because they don't truly know what books are.
Finally, Montag senses that Beatty knows he took a book. After a lot of debating, Montag finally decides which book to give Beatty.
