1498-1502- Europeans first discovered Florida's coast.
1513- Juan Ponce de Leon landed North of Cape Canaveral and gave Florida its name.
1564 - French missionaries settled Fort Caroline in 1564. A year later, Spanish troops arrived and drove the French out and established St. Augustine, the first permanent European settlement.
1845 - Florida was admitted to the Union as a slave state on March 3, 1845.
1861-1865- Conflict about states' rights led to the CIvil War. Florida left the Union and joined the Confederacy.
1868 - After the Civil War, Florida was readmitted to the Union with a new state constitution.
