The setting in this story is in the snow, the main character is the man and he is joined by his dog. He is trying to get to his friends by going through the snow. "There was no sun or hint of sun, though there was not a cloud in the sky" (pg.331) letting readers know that it was really clear and cold.
Rising action: When walking they came across water, they had to get across it but the man felt really uneasy about just walking over it. while the dog was walking on it he got his back legs really wet and with how cold it was the water started to freeze up rapidly.
The man who was also wet had to help the dog take off the frozen water from his paws. he did not want the dogs legs to freeze up because they had to keep on going.
Climax: When walking over this water, the dog and the man fell into the water this
Falling action: The man was starting to realize that there was not much more that he could do. Because he was under a tree filled with ice, the ice fell onto the fire he had BARELY lit. "and the fire, and the fire was blotted out" (pg.339) indicating that because he was under that tree filled with snow, his fire was taken out when it all fell.
Resolution: After realizing that things weren't going to get better the man decided to lay there and die. His dog "crept close to the man and caught the scent of death" (pg.346) showing that the man had died.
