Storyboard Text

  • If I had a thousand lives, I would sacrifice all of them for you. There is nothing to forgive, I die for you with joy in my heart!
  • Please forgive me, my dear Katte, in God's name, forgive me!
  • Frederick the Great, or Frederick II was born on January 24, 1712 in Berlin, Prussia to Frederick William I of Prussia and Princess Sophia-Dorothea.
  • Frederick loved music, philosophy, and poetry. His adoration for French language and religion impacted his future leadership. However, he was abused by his restrictive father.
  • In 1730, Frederick tried to run away with his best friend or possibly lover, Hans Hermann Von Katte. They got caught and Frederick was forced to watch as Hans got decapitated.
  • Frederick was crowned King of Prussia on May 31, 1740. Almost immediately he started an eight-year war with Silesia, which ended successfully and declared him a "military genius".
  • Frederick benefited Prussia greatly during the Diplomatic Revolution, especially by training an army. This war lasted seven years. Austria allied with France and Russia, and Prussia with England.
  • Frederick the Great died at the age of 74 on August 17, 1786, at Sanssouci, his Rococo palace outside Berlin. Napoleon visited his grave in 1806.
