In chapter one Ponyboy was jumped by the Socs on his way home from the movies. They pinned him down, held a blade against his throat, and stuffed a handkerchief into his moth to keep him from talking.
"Hey, grease." "We're gonna do you a favor, greaser. We're gonna cut all that long greasy hair off."
In chapter two Ponyboy, Dally, and Johnny met Cherry and Marcia at the drive in. As Ponyboy talked more to Cherry he realized even though the Socs seem perffect even they have their own challenges.
"Things are rough all over."
In chapter three Ponyboy doesn't realize what time it is and he returns home to find his brother worried sick about him, he got so angry he accidently slapped Ponyboy. This leads to Ponyboy feeling that Darry doesn't want him around so he runs away.
"Where the heck have you been? Do you know what time it is?"
In an act of self defense Johnny killed Bob with his switchblade because he was afraid he and Ponyboy were going to get beat up like they did before.
"Johnny!" "What are we gonna do? They put you in the electric chair for killing people!"
In chapter five Johnny comes up with the idea to cut and dye their hair so their appearances do not match the descriptions in the police report. Ponyboy also remebers a poem by Robert Frost that reminds him of his youth and the fun times he had with his parents, when his wasn't convicted of a crime.
"Oh, no!" "No, Johnny, not my hair!"
"I'll get them, don't worry!"
