(The story of an 18-year-old boy fed up with his life being run by others.
Franklin Crabbe decides he's going to run away to the camp him and his father used to go to.
A woman who has also been hiding out in the woods finds him and saves Crabbe's life. Her name is Mary Pallas. After tending to his wounds; and introductions are over, Mary decides to let Crabbe hang around for a bit. She teaches him important life skills needed to survive in the woods. They become friends after this.
Today's the day.
Crabbe packs up his things and heads off for Ithaca Camp a few hours past midnight.
Crabbe realizes a little too late that he doesn't have a map or a compass; and when he was trying to navigate the many portages surrounding Ithaca Camp, he enters one that leads him over the edge of a waterfall.
A few months later, Mary and Crabbe notice they are running low on their food supply. Together, they go on a raid into a town not far off from where they are camping out. But, something awful happens, forcing them to retreat. On their way back, they had to climb up a rocky cliff. Once at the top, convinced they wouldn't be chased anymore; Crabbe suggested they gather some wood to make a fire. Mary offers her help, drained as she is. When Crabbe turns his back, Mary flings herself over the edge of the cliff.
