At the beginning the man and his dog are on a journey through the freezing Yukon Territory to meet up with the boys at the camp.
As the man and his dog travel, the conditions in the Yukon Territory get worse. To the point when the man has to be more cautious and careful. The dog starts to learn the man does not know what he is doing.
The man and the dog come up to a stream under the snow. The man knows how dangerous walking around the stream is, so he sent his dog to walk in front of him. But he ends up by falling in and forces him to build a fire to heat back up.
The man ends up by being able to build a fire but after he got the fire built, snow from the tree above smothers the fire and leaves the man freezing with no heat.
The man tries to pick up his matches but can not. He tries to get the blood flowing in his body by running around but is unsuccessful after a couple of tries. The man comes to to the realization that he is probably going to die.
The man finally gave up and decided to sleep to have a less painful death. As he tries to calm down he realizes that the old timer on Sulpher creek was right and how sad the boys would be when they find his body. The dogs decides to continue the journey to the camp after the man dies.
