Finally the train reaches the border between Mexico and United States. It stops in the City of Mexicali where the passengers must disembark in order to pass through inmigration.
While Esperanza and Mama wait for everybody else to pass through immigration. They notice several group of people being direct into another train heading did back to Mexico
Esperanza and Ramona are lucky to had made it through immigration with no problems. There nervously was for Alfonso, Hortencia, and Miguel. They could not find them. They jumped to the train at the last moment. Esperanza was mad because they was waiting for them she was worry.
On Thursday they finally arrive to Los Angeles, and meet Alfonso's brother "Juan" and his family. Isabel was impressed of Esperanza she thought she was a rich girl. Esperanza imagined Isabel like if she were the doll that her dad gave her.
Everybody piles into a rickety old truck and they set up. On the ride Isabel explains to them how is the place were they will be living. Finally they stop for lunch, Esperanza stops on a overlook, she wonders if she can hear the heartbeat of the Valley like she did with her dad. She lies down on the land she can't hear nothing, she loses her patience and begins to cry.
The train enters to San Joaquin Valley, they stop a couple of times to collect leftovers melons. Then they stop to pick up a girl that the family knows. Her name is Marta. When Marta finds out that Esperanza used to be rich, she isn't very nice with her. To change the subject, Isabel points out groups of workers. Marta explains that the farmers don't want workers bond together to bargain for higher wages or better housing. Esperanza don't like Marta.
