  • 1774 - The First Continental CongressIn response to years of British abuses which culminated in the creation of The Intolerable Acts, delegates from every colony traveled to Philadelphia to discuss their plan of action against the Crown's injustices.
  • "George Washington is the Continental Army's Commander in Chief!"
  • This Congress focused on free debate and equality of delegates, no matter their colonial home.
  • "Through this Declaration of Rights, declare our loyalty to Britain, but they have no right to tax us! Ready each colonial militia in case of violence!"
  • "We will pass the Articles of Association which notes that as of December 1st, the colonies will stop importing goods from the British Isles.'
  • They issued a strict ultimatum.IF Britain failed to address their complaints by 1775, the colonies would cease exporting goods to Britain and Congress would be forced to reconvene.
  • 1775 - The Second Continental CongressWith the Revolutionary War in full swing after the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the Congress met once again.
  • The Congress issued its Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms. To soften the blow, they sent a personal appeal to King George III in the Olive Branch Petition, which was rejected.
  • In 1776, Britain continued to wage war on their own people while the Congress continued to pledge their loyalty. On July 4th, the Congress voted to approve the Declaration of Independence. They were now politically free from Britain!
