You follow Nya an 11 year old girl who has to collect water as her chore but she has to walk a very long distance.
Nya is an 11-year-old girl living in South Sudan. Every day she carries a container to a lake to fill it with water. To make her long journey to the lake easier she carries the container in different ways.
Nya is at the lake and thirst from her long journey there. She decides to fill her gourd up with water to have a drink before her journey back. She still drinks the water even though it has had other peoples feet in it.
Nya and her family have moved up next to the lake for 5 months because it's dried up. Since the lake is dried up Nya has to dig small holes and wait for the water to seep in and it's even muddier and filthy than normal. Since Akeer was drinking the muddy watre she became sick and would have to go see the doctor.
Akeer is feeling better and is practically back to her old self laughing and playing with Nya. Nya however overhears her mom and the white doctor talking about how Akeer can only drink clean water. To get clean water however you would need to boil it for up to 500 counts which would cause the water to evaporate.
Nya and her village have now moved back to after the rains fill the lake up again. Two men come to Nya's village and speak to her Uncle and the chief. Nya's Uncle see's her listening and translates that they think in between two tree's there is water.
The two men have started drilling a hole where they said water would be at. They have the villagers help drill and they bring in big machines that look like giraffes. Every time Nya comes back from collecting water sees that the hole is growing bigger.
