Mathilde lived a simple life. She dreamed of being wealthy, and she suffered from her poorness. One day, her husband brought her a surprise invitation to a ball. Mathilde was upset because she had no gown or jewels. Her husband told her he would buy her a new gown, and suggested she should ask one of her wealthy friends to borrow some jewels.
Mathilde visited her friend Mdme. Forestier. She explained her situation and Mdme. Forestier said she could borrow any jewels she would like. Mathilde borrowed a diamond necklace.
When Mathilde arrived at the ball, all eyes were on her. She was the prettiest woman there. Every guy had introduced themselves to her and she was noticed by everyone.
Once Mathilde left the ball it was around 4 in the morning. Her and her husband caught a cab home and once they arrived home she realized the necklace had fallen off. Her husband decided to walk back the way they came to look for it, but he had no luck in finding it.
Mathilde and her husband did all they could to scrape up enough money to buy a new necklace. It costed 40,000 francs. Once they bought a new necklace and returned it to Mdme. Forestier, they spent the next 10 years working to pay off their debt.
Ten years later, Mathilde ran into Mdme. Forestier in town. She decided to tell Mdme. Forestier about her struggles. She said hello and Mdme. Forestier did not recognize her, for her beauty had faded throughout the years. Once she told Mdme. Forestier about her debt, Mdme. Forestier told her that the necklace had been a fake and only costed 300 francs.
