One major theme in The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is fear and suspicion are destructive. This can be shown in the examples above, towards the end of the story on page 83 Charlie stole the gun from Steve and shot Pete Van Horn. This proved the theme because he was so scared he was acting on adrenaline. He was suspicious of anyone and everyone that when a creepy figure was striding up to them the fear and suspicion caught up with him, shooting and killing Pete Van Horn. Secondly, on page 84 and 85 everyone was turning on each other, blaming one another because they were scared. There were shouts of It's Tommy! It's Steve It's Charlie! they were trying to find a scape goat. They were anxious and scared, and ,obviously, suspicious so suspicious that when Steve tried to find a solution he was punched. In the final scene or page 85 everyone fights each other, driven by fear and suspicion. We can also infer that the fear and suspicion destoyed their relatationships and there health. That sums up why fear and suspicion are destructive is one of the many themes in The Monsters are Due on Maple Street.
