That old dog down yonder.
Tim Johnson was a dog well-known to all of Maycomb, and very familiar to Jem and Scout.
Yeah.
Whatcha looking at?
That's old Tim Johnson, ain't it?
The Scout children rushed home and told their cook, Calpurnia about the wild-looking dog.
We should head home, Scout. I think there's something wrong with that dog.
Cal then used the telephone to warn the neighborhood of the rabid animal on the loose
What's the matter, children?
That dog is sick, Cal. I'm worried.
As the dog approached, the only two men who remained outside after Cal's warning were the sheriff and Atticus Finch.
Sheriff, you know I haven't touched a gun in 30 years, but I'll do it if I have to.
You know what needs to be done, Atticus. My aim isn't good enough, and you're the man for this one-shot job.
Atticus didn't want it to come to this, but he portrayed it more as putting Tim Johnson out of his misery.
You saved the day, dad.
The Finch children learned a lot that day about their father, for they previously thought they had the most boring dad in the town.
I didn't know you were that good of a shot!
