  •    A reservation is a destination of land that is for run by a Native American.
  • If Indians moved from the east, then they were promised land in the Great Plains. If they gave up their land. they would be promised food, farm tools and they would learn to "live like whites".
  • White settlers got the best land, and left the unwanted land for the Native Americans. The Natives land was very poor for hunting.
  • At this time period, the government wanted to make Native American act/behave more like whites. They also taught the Natives how to act like the White Americans. This is assimilation, assimilation is the process of 1 group taking on the traits of another.
  • They wanted Native Americans to act like whites by learning about white cultures instead of learning about native cultures. If they practiced native religion they would be harshly punished.
  • Some people were concernd about the Native Americans, they thought that assimilation would help them get rich. Other poeple were looking to  get rid of Native American land claims.
  • Many Native Americans deiced they were going to fight back, agianst assimilation.
