Douglass was still in the woods not knowing if he would ever find someone. But then he finds a fellow slave in a cabin, his name was sandy, they became friends very fast, talking over the fire. Sandy then soon says, “Do you believe in Magic?” Frederick is confused and answers back saying,” No, there is no such thing as magic.” But sandy soon said,” Well I have a Magic root that will make you invincible to being hit by a slave master ever again.” Frederick not believing this, took it , but it still gave him hope, he did not believe that it could protect him from being whipped he took it saying, “even though it may not work I will still take it”.
Douglass, with the magic root in hand bravely heads back to the farm, still not knowing if the root is real heads back to the farm with hope. Frederick turns up to the farm and is seen by covey right away, covey calls frederick over to him right away. Covey hits douglass, but douglass is determined he is no longer scared of covey, and out of nowhere douglass swings back. All the slaves have never seen this type of action by a slave. Covey takes this as a challenge and swings back, a fight has broke loose, Douglass and covey start wrestling and fall to the ground. They start yelling at each other saying things like,”give up” and “i will never lose to you.”Then all of a sudden douglass ends up on top and all the slaves are in awe of the courage of this slave. Douglass feeling accomplished just looks down at covey and says nothing and walks away.
After the fight Douglass vows and promises himself he would never think or act like a slave again. Douglass is never touched by Covey or any slave master ever again, Douglass had won the respect of Covey and all the other slaves. That hope he had when he went to Covey had finally returned and he would tell himself that he knew one day he would be free, if it is escaping of being killed he would one day be free.
