Jacques Cartier, a French explorer, he and his crew discovered a river in North America, and decided to name it the "St. Lawrence River."
He then followed the river, which led him to a site, which today is now Montreal.
100 years later, the French had explored and claimed almost all the areas around the Great Lakes, and used those areas to create New France.
New France was struggling pretty bad at first. Reason is because many settlers died from diseases, hunger, or war with the natives.
In 1754, there was a fight between French and the British. But when the war ended in 1763, France was forced to give all its land to Britain
Later on in the Spanish lands, the native people were suffering even more from diseases, which prevented them from the growth of colonies.
