In ancient Sumer they suffered from food shortages. Thankfully they created an irrigation system that provided there crops with a normal water supply. The Sumerians also created a plow, this plow changed agriculture. The plow was able to go around and turn the soil to make a spot to plant a crop.

Social Structure and Government
Kings, priests, and government officials such as, scribes were first in the social levels. Scribes helped record laws and contracts. Merchants and artisans are next in the order, they made or sold things. Then last were the slaves. The Sumerians civilization was ruled by the government. The government made sure Sumer was a safe place by directing peoples behavior and making life orderly.
Sumerians tried to please there gods in almost every possible way. One way Sumerians showed ther religious beliefs was by building temples and towers called ziggurats. Ziggurats were made of mud bricks. Sumerians also made statues to show there religious beliefs. The statues showed people worshipping there gods.
Metalworkers made objects such as, weapons, cups, and decorative items. Another thing Sumerians did was create music. They believed playing music brought joy to there gods. The Sumerians sang and played instruments such as the lyre. The lyre is a wooden instrument, they often decorated it.
The invention of the wheel was very important. Before the wheel they pulled flat bottom carts called sledges. Sledges were used to carry goods, and bring them from one place to the next.
The Sumerians created a language called cuneiform, cuneiform was a form of writing using symbols called pictographs.
