Enlisting in the United States Army, Ivan is trained to be a sniper. And he's good at it — very good. But Vietnam isn't the war Ivan was expecting. Somehow the glory and heroism of his father's war stories just doesn't apply in the jungles. Now, for the first time, Ivan is forced to question what he's really fighting for...and whether Vietnam is a fight anyone can hope to win.
Ivan and his three friends realize how serious the war in Vietnam is when they are all drafted one at a time. Ivan is unlike his friends, he is wanting to fight this war.
While in Vietnam Ivan excels in all areas and is quickly selected for a special unit. Ivan soon finds him self in situations he wasn't ready to face and he now realizes his friends and himself are no longer who they were.
All of the boys did not expect to be sent to all different branches of the military.
Lt. Systrome hands Ivan an M21 sniper system to look over a field.
Ivan is set up in a tree to watch his friends go into a village to talk to some Vietnamese people about trading. Ivan was told to snipe anyone who looked like they were dangerous or carrying a weapon. Right when his friends are about to leave the village a little boy comes running out of the woods with a gun trying to shoot at Ivan's friends. Ivan has to follow through with his order and snipes the little boy.
