  • During the whole group lesson, for the "during reading," I placed students in groups based on individual needs. I was able to ask each group comprehension questions based on their level of need. I feel this part of the lesson went very well! For the first small group lesson, I was also able to ask comprehension questions based on those students needs. This lesson went well too. During the whole group lesson, for the multisensory vocabulary activity, since the group as a whole is very quiet, I decided to have them read the definitions, put the words into sentences, and have them draw a picture. The students did not seem to be having very much fun. If I were to teach this again, I would turn it into a game!
  • Deer ValentineBy: Beverly J. Letchworth
  • In my small group lesson, the students showed a lot of self-efficacy. They believed they could reach the goal of the lesson. Even though they were struggling writers, they have a lot of adults behind them encouraging them to do their best. For the small group writing lesson, every student in the group scored a 100%.During the whole group lesson, while the students were reading, some of the students did not know the proper reading strategies to solve unknown words. The book had no pictures, so they did not know the next steps. Thinking of a different word that would make sense in the context would be a good fix.
  • Have you ever experienced a change within a friendship? How did this change make you feel and what character traits did you demonstrate?
  • Hmm...let me think...When Colin offered to help with the Valentine and Kendra said yes, she was surprised she did not feel shy. How have I felt when I tried something that was new to me?
  • Wow! You are brave. I tried a rollercoaster, but I did not like it.
  • I felt great when I tried a rollercoaster!
  • The text for my whole group lesson was "Number the Stars." It is historical fiction novel about two young girls during World War II. The students enjoyed this text because it was unique and different than their textbook stories. They were able to see into the lives of two children, their own age, during WWII. However, even though the story was interesting, the text was at frustration level for some students. I grouped the students according to level, but I also included at least two strong leaders in each group. This leader either took over reading or helped the struggling reader out. This worked very well.
  • The text for my small group was called, "Deer Valentine." It was a leveled book intended for ages 7 -10. The interest level of this short story definitely matched my students. They understood and related to how these children helped create a Valentine's surprise for a friend in need. This made creating a writing prompt simple, and the student's felt successful while writing. I was worried the boys in my group might not enjoy the story, but it was the opposite. They both related to the content and enjoyed the story. This text was perfect for my small group of fourth graders!

  • For both the whole group and small group lessons, I asked the students critical comprehension questions. These questions were my favorite part of the whole class lesson, and they were also successful during the small group, The comprehension questions encouraged a natural discussion between the students. All of them enjoyed sharing aspects of their own life and comparing and contrasting their views and experiences with their classmates. These questions really helped the social aspect of the literacy event.
  • When I moved from Chicago...
  • Context
  • For the whole class lesson, during reading, the students were given the tasks of reading the stories with their reading groups and filling out their graphic organizer, which compared and contrasted character traits. This went well; however, there were a few behavior issues with certain groups. Two groups did not complete the tasks as well as I would have liked. During the first small group lesson, the students listened to the text and then were provided the task of a writing prompt where they had to answer and explain a time where they made someone feel better. This task went well, and I believe it was because these students were in a small group setting where they received more individual attention and had less distractions.
