Eliezer is a 15 year old boy who has put his faith in God. Shlomo is the father of Eliezer. They live in a Ghetto called Sighet. They are Jews that lived in Germany during World War 2.
German soldiers started to take Jew from their homes and take them into concentration camps. The soldiers strip Eliezer and his family of all of their belongings. Families were put on trains to Auschwitz.
Eliezer and his family are put on a train and when they got off, the soldiers told them left or right. This is where families were separated and they were told if they are going to live or die. This was the first selection that took place throughout the book. Eliezer and his father both made it through selection, but did not know about Eliezer’s mother or sisters.
Eliezer and his father were transferred from Auschwitz to Buna. Eliezer is losing his faith in God because he is wondering how God could let all this horror happen. Eliezer had to have surgery on his foot due to swelling and how he could not put weight on it. After the surgery he stayed in the infirmary and was given more rations of soup and bread.
Russia was gaining on Germany and they were close to Buna. The German soldiers made the Jew walk from Buna to Buchenwald in the snow. Many Jews died because they were either shot for not keeping up the pace or they died from starvation, exhaustion or from the cold. Eliezer had to go on this death march on his foot that he just had surgery on.
Eliezer’s father had died when they reached Buchenwald. The Americans rolled up to the gates of Buchenwald in tanks to liberate the Jews, and block by block the Jews were released into freedom. Eliezer survived this year and he moved to America were he later on met up with his sister.
