Right as Fredrick was finishing up and about to walk out Mr.Covey walked in with a long rope in his hands. “You going somewhere?” said Mr.Covey. Mr.Covey leaped at Fredrick with the rope trying to tie him up to beat him. Fredrick jumped out of his arms and started to run. Mr.Covey grabbed Fredrick’s legs but Fredrick was able to get out he then grabbed Mr.Covey by the throat. “Hughes get in here and help me” said Mr.Covey. Hughes came and tried to help but “WHAM” Fredrick kicked him under his ribs and hughes fell over. Mr.Covey went for a stick but couldn't reach it. Mr.Covey called over someone else but he refused to help him. Mr.Covey was running out of options.
Fredrick and Mr.Covey fought for hours. Both of them looked like they were getting tired but kept fighting. ”You tired already” said Mr.Covey. “I’m just getting warmed up” Said Fredrick. The fight finally ended a few hours later and they were both lying there on the ground covered in sweat, blood, and dirt. When they finally caught their breathe they left each other alone and went about their business.
For the next four years that Fredrick was a slave Mr.Covey never laid a finger on him. He never got beat by Mr.Covey after their fight and Mr.Covey had way more respect for Fredrick than he ever had. All because of that one fight Fredrick’s life had changed for the better. The other slaves also had more respect for Fredrick than before the fight. Fredrick later escaped to the north and wrote a book about his time in slavery and made speeches to shed light on the subject of slavery and how bad it was for him and his fellow slaves. Fredrick was an important part of the end of slavery in the United States.
