  • Taxi driver's brain scans are compared to a normal man's ones. 
  • Normal men
  • Taxi Drivers
  • Taxi Driver (right handed) who took the "Knowledge test" and have had their license for over  1.5 years.  16 male taxi drivers are used for this experiment
  • 50 right handed men who are not taxi drivers
  • MRI
  • They used 2 different techniques: Voxel-based morphometry -- used to measure density of grey matter in the brain.  Pixel counting -- Uses the number of pixels to calculate the area of the hippocampus.
  • RESULTS 
  • 1- The posterior hippocampus of a taxi driver was larger than the one of the normal subjects. 2- The volume of the  right posterior hippocampus  was related with the amount of years spent as a taxi driver. 3- No other part of the brain was affected. (red indicates hippocampus )

  • IMPLICATIONS
  • 1-Experiences directly change and affect  the physical appearance of the brain. 2-It is much more malleable than we had argued before
