Taxi driver's brain scans are compared to a normal man's ones.
Taxi Driver (right handed) who took the "Knowledge test" and have had their license for over 1.5 years. 16 male taxi drivers are used for this experiment
50 right handed men who are not taxi drivers
They used 2 different techniques: Voxel-based morphometry -- used to measure density of grey matter in the brain. Pixel counting -- Uses the number of pixels to calculate the area of the hippocampus.
1- The posterior hippocampus of a taxi driver was larger than the one of the normal subjects. 2- The volume of the right posterior hippocampus was related with the amount of years spent as a taxi driver. 3- No other part of the brain was affected. (red indicates hippocampus )
Taxi driver's MRI
Normal man's MRI
1-Experiences directly change and affect the physical appearance of the brain. 2-It is much more malleable than we had argued before
