The theme of this scene is do not judge someone as one does not necessarily know the full story. This is proved by Jem who, because he thinks Miss Dubose is a mean person who disrespects his father he destroys her garden. When in fact she is struggling with illness and a morphine attention and cannot help it. Prejudging can lead to unjust actions.
